Forward Montana Foundation (FMF) is dedicated to educating, engaging, and organizing young Montanans to shape their democracy to improve their lives and the lives of their fellow Montanans. We put young people on the front lines of civic engagement statewide, basing our efforts out of our two offices in Missoula and Bozeman, and our satellite branch in Billings.

Job Description:

The Bozeman Field Organizer will lead our field efforts to register MSU students to vote, while building relationships with student leaders, recruiting student volunteers and interns, and promoting our issue campaigns on campus. This requires the organizer be able to both communicate organizational goals and advocate for our campaigns to young people in a fun, intelligent, and accessible way.

Applicants should have initiative and be self-reliant, and have a passion for making real, tangible change in their communities. The Field Organizer will split time between our political and civic projects and will be responsible for running the Bozeman MSU field program under the supervision of the Bozeman Field Manager, and within the statewide strategy of Forward Montana and Forward Montana Foundation.


  • Responsible for meeting voter registration, voter mobilization and issue advocacy metrics

  • Support the Field Manager in all administrative and outreach efforts as necessary, which may include but is not limited to data entry, event identification, preparation and execution, recruitment, donor outreach, and assisting with our internship program

  • Provide proper training and support to interns and volunteers at a variety of different events including canvassing, phone banking, and tabling

  • Coordinate and keep organized schedules of volunteers and interns

  • Recruit and foster leadership development in a core group of student volunteers


Gotta-Have Skillsets: Must be present for a candidate to move forward in the hiring process.

  • Passion for grassroots organizing and building youth power, especially field work

  • Ability to independently manage and complete multiple tasks and projects accurately and by deadline

  • Ability to communicate effectively across a variety of stakeholders, including but not limited to peers, elected officials, donors, partners, and fellow staff members

Nice-to-Have Skill Sets: Not required, but having these skills would make a candidate’s transition into the job more seamless for the individual and the organization.

  • Comfortable with public speaking

  • Experience, either professional or voluntary, with grassroots campaigning/electoral campaigns

  • Comfort with frequent change and urgency

  • Familiarity with MSU’s Campus & relationships with student groups and organizations on the MSU campus

  • Leadership development skills

Working Conditions:

  • Shared office with the Bozeman Field Manager, interns and High School Outreach Coordinantor

  • Comfortable conducting field work, including voter registration, canvassing, and street teaming, for up to 4 hours at a time, often in a stationary position

  • Some travel required


  • Compensation: $11.50 per hour for 20 hours/week
